When his brand-new red Schwinn bicycle was stolen, a tearful and angry young Clay told a police officer he wanted to "whup" the thief. That police officer, Joe E. Martin, happened to also train amateur boxers at the local Columbia Gym. Martin told Clay he should learn how to fight before he tried confronting anyone, and subsequently introduced him to the sport. That stolen bike set Ali on the path to becoming an Olympic gold medalist and a global icon.
